It has been waves upon waves of celebrity couples who seemed so much in love to be seen drawing swords and waging war online, using acidic words, posts and images to hurt each other. The recent onslaught of failed marriages among people of importance is truly overwhelming.
From Korra Obidi/ Justin Dean saga to Nkechi Blessing/Opeyemi Falegan altercation to Julius Agwu’s brewing storm in paradise. This leaves a lot on the minds of fans and the society at large.
Many people have this formed opinions about celebrity marriages, they always conclude that they don’t last. And as we have seen in recent years, a celebrity is known to be either divorced or has an ‘enstranged’ spouse. Enstranged is now the new normal.
Why is it that most celebrities succeed at everything else except love and marriage? They work their head off to build a career or name for themselves yet they fail at keeping their relationship working.
According to a study by the Marriage Foundation UK, celebrity marriages crash at a rate twice that of regular marriages. So why is it that celebrities fail at love and marriage?
We often if not always, admire celebrity couples, the glitz, the glamour, the fun – many of which are a veneer for the ugly scenes that the camera doesn’t show us. But more importantly, we should realize that they are human too. They are not immune to marital woes.
Reasons like Infidelity, Time they spend on project locations and time the couples are apart contribute to celebrity marriage crisis. Ego and Jealousy included. Celebrities are used to being the centre of attention. Some prioritize their importance or need above that of their partner.
Jealousy can also creep in when one partner is more successful than the other (especially if they are on the same career path). One is getting all the love and endorsement, while the other is barely scratching the surface.
While some celebrities have messy breakups and declare it public, many of them are discreetly ending their marriages; for instance, Dr Did and wife Simi called their marriage quits after storms brewed in paradise in 2017. Simi made the formal announcement in 2020.
Blossom Chukwujekwu and Maureen Esisi also did same, ended their marriage without making messy headlines. Same goes for Chris Attoh and Damilola Adegbite.
Although some celebrities have proven that marriage between two stars can last, couples like Will and Jada Pinkett Smith, Joke and Olu Jacobs, Mercy Johnson and Prince Odianosen Okojie and the list goes on.
In as much as we always see what the camera shows us, we must always remember that we do not have all the facts, we do not know what goes on behind the scenes. Many marriages are picture perfect but dark inside. Same goes for our beloved celebrities.
This goes to show that every relationship needs effort from both parties to make it work, celebrity or not.
What are your thoughts? Is it ethical for celebrities to bare their animosity and wash dirty linens under public eye when love goes sour?
